FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MOROCCAN-BORN ARTIST MEHDI BAHMAD’S DEBUT SINGLE ‘ROUGE À LÈVRES’ MUSIC VIDEO
Mehdi Bahmad’s alt-pop ‘Rouge à Lèvres’ music video is a reverse motion hedonistic narrative that sensitively questions gender roles.
[Montreal, Canada] — Moroccan-born singer-songwriter MEHDI BAHMAD released early in April his debut single ‘Rouge à Lèvres’, an atmospheric and layered romantic appeal for gender roles liberation. The now released music video is warm and seductive and empowers a generation of young women and men (and everyone in between) embracing their identity and striving to make their voice heard.
The ‘Rouge à Lèvres’ music video, conceived and directed by MEHDI, cinematographed by Derek Branscombe, depicts a young woman coming back home dazed after a party where she and the other characters shared moments of bliss and tenderness. They shared the same message, a message transmitted by MEHDI who addresses androgyny. The rouge à lèvres (lipstick) is symbolic of a strong archetype of femaleness and is used by MEHDI to question the norms of gender paradigms.
Before moving to Canada at the age of 8, MEHDI and his family lived in Morocco and South of France. Through his music, he explores and expresses the confrontations he has always faced being raised in a family rooted in the cultural values and principles of Islam while evolving in the Western world.
MEHDI’s debut EP is a quest for emancipation; a quest he quickly realized he was not alone in. The release is planned for 2019. MEHDI also considers himself as a visual artist. For him music has to pair with visual to truly be transmitted and understood. Thereby, visual occupies a very important place in his process. His universe is made of senses, that have been ashamed for too long.
